Curator Michelle Bello at Sloan Miyasato Fine Art presents works by Marc Katano, a master of the ethereal and the expressive line. His newest large-scale paintings on paper once again hit their mark by combining the spontaneity of line with the physicality of paint or ink. With each piece the materials vary slightly, but all adhere to Katano’s interest in simple and natural movements. He is an intuitive painter whose works appear effortless. To achieve balance Katano applies dense strokes of paint in close proximity to one another, layering a darker form on a lighter form with rhythmic and nuanced patterns. Painting on handmade Japanese and Nepalese paper supplies a textural backdrop and evokes Katano’s respect for the natural world.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Katano currently lives and works in Northern California. He received his BFA from California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA, and has exhibited his work in museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. His work is in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Jose Museum, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

“I am interested in the facades people present to hide things about themselves,” says photographer Lydia Panas. “I look for the smallest details to understand what might lie underneath. My pictures are not so much portraits of the models, as a view of interior life. In this series of portraits I constructed a system where food becomes a barrier, symbolic of the obstacles we create to disguise our intimate feelings. It is not the models’ faces that suggest the emotion, but the way the food is presented. Together the portraits in this series present a feast: fruit, pasta, meat, vegetables. We are not sure whether they provide nourishment or taunt us with the gifts.”

Panas’s work has been exhibited widely, including at the National Portrait Gallery, London, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. The recipient of a Whitney Museum Independent Study Fellowship, her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Brooklyn Museum, and Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago.

Catherine Wagner

While in residence at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco Catherine Wagner developed a series of large-scale photographic works based on objects from the Academy’s collection that relate to what the natural world looked like 300 million years ago. Digital technology has allowed her to construct hundreds of images of plant and insect species that existed then and reconstruct them into a new form. She is decontextualizing them as specimens and recontextualizing them as formal, calligraphic gestures that are interralated and form a new visual language.

Wagner earned a BFA and MFA from San Francisco State University and has held a faculty position in the art department at Mills College since 1978. She received a Guggenheim fellowship and was named one of Time magazine’s Fine Arts Innovators of the Year. Her work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Jimi Gleason

Jimi Gleason seduces viewers with his latest body of work The Diamond Paintings. Utilizing non-traditional techniques and the luminescent use of silver deposit, they allow us to reflect on the mechanics of perception. The surfaces of these paintings have been purposely overexposed to his chemical electroplating process and as a result are corroded. Some parts may appear smoother than others but all have been chemically altered to some degree, providing a push-pull effect. His elegant diamond shapes beckon while his uneven surfaces keep us at bay.

Jimi Gleason: Silvering, 2014

Born in Newport Beach, California, Gleason received his BA from UC Berkeley and studied printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute before relocating to New York City where he worked as a photo assistant and technician. Returning to California, he was employed in the studio of noted abstract painter Ed Moses for five years. His paintings are held in public and private collections around the world. Gleason’s works have been exhibited in conjunction with significant institutions including the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, Armand Hammer Museum, and Seattle Art Museum.

Curator Michelle Bello is pleased to present this major photographic work by Sean McFarland at Sloan Miyasato Fine Art. The piece includes 64 cyanotypes representing the phenomenon of viewing the moon during the daytime. Employing the early photographic process of cyanotype, McFarland made these images without a camera by placing an object–a nickel to depict the moon–directly onto the surface of light-sensitive paper and then exposed it to light. The result resembles multiple moons against a blue sky.

McFarland received his MFA from the California College of the Arts and teaches at the San Francisco Art Institute.  He received the Phelan Art Award in photography, a fellowship from the National Photography Institute at Columbia University, a Baum Award for an Emerging American Photographer, a John Guttmann Photography Fellowship, and a Eureka Fellowship. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art Library in New York City, Milwaukee Art Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, Oakland Museum of California, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Just in at Sloan Miyasato Fine Art: a stunning, large-scale watercolor and goauche hybrid by Laurie Reid, curated by Michelle Bello. Reid opens communication between the past and present in this tour de force painting by utilizing a completed piece from a previous body of work as the foundation upon which the new painting was created. Woven into this earlier work are expressive and erratic roving lines–bent, segmented and rendered in bold colored gouache. These extend branch-like throughout the signature drips and whispers of watercolor that characterize her past work. This intervention reveals a lesson in coexistence as past and present imagery mingle and tangle together in shared space. A possible relationship between line and the support structure offered by the original painting is explored. While the original painting might be considered a fundamental armature, the additions can be seen perhaps as melody line or a kind of sly narrative voice that subtly adds its own two cents.

Laurie Reid received an MFA from California College of the Arts and a BA in French Literature from Reed College. Her work has been widely exhibited throughout the country, including the Drawing Center in New York City and the Berkeley Art Museum. Reid was also the recipient of a Society of the Encouragement of Contemporary Art (SECA) award and was included in the Whitney Biennial. Her work is in the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum, and Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

Sloan Miyasato Fine Art is excited to have on view this group of glittering drawings by Laurie Reid, curated by Michelle Bello. Reid draws with crushed glass and silver mirror, creating works that sparkle as light flickers and flashes off these highly reflective surfaces. Unlike her watercolors where light quietly hovers on the subtle edges of the raised lines, this light is dramatic. It moves endlessly over the permanently frozen images inviting a spry meditation on how the hand of the artist and the eye of the viewer come together to create new and interesting visual experiences.
